HM Prison Service
Following on from Edmond Shipway’s extensive track record with HM Prison Service in delivering major refurbishments and security upgrades at HMP Manchester and Wakefield we have worked on two accommodation schemes at HMP Ranby and HMP Wymott to raise the capacity of the prisons. New house blocks were constructed and these resulted in the need to upgrade facilities throughout the prisons to handle the increased numbers of inmates. These were the first PPC 2000 partnering jobs carried out by HMPS.
The projects were challenging for obvious reasons with work being carried out on a number of fronts throughout the prison. On these projects we tried to integrate the CDM processes and in particular the Health and Safety Plan with existing HMPS systems covering prison security, access, fire and emergency arrangements, contractor co-ordination etc.
The projects involved work on multiple buildings and external work across the prison site. We found that past information about the site from previous projects was difficult to locate. As a result, Edmond Shipway produced a Health and Safety File strategy for the prisons which involved us preparing a Health and Safety File for each building structure as well as a separate File for the external works. The information was prepared in a format in hard copy and CD, so that key Health and Safety issues could easily be identified and so that the File could easily be updated for future schemes.
